A week after the police crackdown on the protesters in Chennai, three police personnel might be suspended for torching a hut and autorickshaws in Nadukuppam and Mylapore on January 23, reported The Times of India.
After News18 TV channel showed people in khaki uniform burning an autorickshaw and a hut at Mylapore and Nadukuppam, the police department has been facing flak from human right activists and political parties.
A source told TOI that two women police personnel where involved in torching a hut at Nadukuppam and an autorickshaw in Mylapore. The third police personnel had allegedly torched an autorickshaw parked near Mylapore.
A police officer told TOI, “their identity has been confirmed after we questioned police personnel deployed there.”
However, the senior police officers refused to give any information about the action to be taken against the three police personnel. They were asked to come for an internal inquiry after which the final action will be decided, reported TOI.
The police commissioner had earlier claimed that these videos were morphed and proper investigation will be carried out on these allegations.
The Chennai police has released a video named ‘Ivanum Tamilan than’ which is doing the rounds on Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp, making an emotional appeal to people on behalf of the police.
However, the National Human Rights Commission and State Human Rights Commission issued notices to the Director General of Police seeking a response on the police crackdown on protesters.
