Seven dead as bus plunges into a gorge in Tamil Nadu’s Ooty

At least seven people, including two women, were killed in the Tamil Nadu hill resort of Ooty on Thursday after a Tamil Nadu state transport corporation bus fell down into a 100-feet gorge.

About 34 passengers were travelling in the bus which started from Ooty and was heading towards Coonoor, a nearby town.

According to police sources, the driver lost control over the bus near Kaanikkai Nagar of Mandhada village on a hilly road.

“Since it has been raining in Ooty for the past few days, the roads are not in good condition here. The bus running a muddy road in Mandhada. It fell into a 100-feet gorge around 11.30 am. On hearing the cries for help from passengers, people who work in a nearby vegetable garden rushed to the spot and found some of them lying in a pool of blood,” said a senior police officer from Nilgiris district.

Innocent Divya, the collector of Nilgiris district, rushed to the accident site and directed the official operation to retrieve the dead bodies and help the injured. Around 50 personnel from the state disaster response force and fire service were deployed for rescue operations. About 25 passengers with severe injuries were sent to the Coimbatore government hospital and the rest are in Ooty general hospital.
