TN man booked for ‘separatist’ Facebook post, evades arrest

The Kumbakonam police have registered a case against a man for sharing an offensive post on Facebook.

The police is on the look-out for Silambarasan (32), from Kumbakonam, for sharing a Facebook post with a ‘separatist’ agenda.

The post has an image that shows a map of India with the state of Tamil Nadu and the north and west of Sri Lanka shaded in black. It also shows one arm of Tamil Nadu handcuffed to India while the other is linked to the north and west of Sri Lanka – a representation of ‘Tamil Eelam’, which was the LTTE’s demand for a separate state in the island-nation.  The image also carries the text, “’Let us refuse Hindi, Hindu and India and accept Tamil, Tamilar and Tamil Nadu”.

The Facebook post is an open invitation for a meeting to be conducted on July 15 by the Tamil Desa Kudiyarasu Katchi in Kumbakonam to safeguard Tamils and to redeem the Tamil motherland.

Surendra Kumar, the Village Administrative Officer (VAO) of Kallapuliyur in Kumbakonam filed the complaint after seeing the post on Facebook.

Speaking to TNM, Surendra Kumar said, “He belongs to an organisation called Tamil Desam Kudiyarasu Katchi. It was offensive because it aimed at dividing India and spewing hatred. Hence I gave a complaint saying that the post is aimed at harming the national integrity.”

Based on this complaint, the Inspector of Police in the Kumbakonam West police station registered a case under section 153 B (1)(c) of the IPC (whoever makes or publishes any assertion, counsel, plea or appeal concerning the obligation of any class of persons, by reason of their being members of any religious, racial, language or regional group or caste or community, and such assertion, counsel, plea or appeal causes or is likely to cause disharmony or feelings of enmity or hatred or ill-will between such members and other persons, shall be punished with imprisonment which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both.)

“The organisation has made publicity material for that meeting which has wordings that are against national integrity. The VAO brought it to our notice and filed a complaint. We have registered an FIR based on the VAO’s complaint,” said Ramesh Kumar, Inspector of Police, Kumbakonam West.
