Aryendra Sharma who resigned from all party posts to bite the bullet from Sahaspur as an independent is challenging PCC chief Kishore Upadhyay, while PCC general secretary Shilpi Arora resigned to file her nominations as an independent from Kichcha against Chief Minister Harish Rawat.

Similarly, BJP heavyweight Satpal Maharaj is being challenged by Kavindra Ishtwal in Chaubatakhal whereas Congress turncoat Subodh Uniyal is facing a tough challenge from BJP rebel in the fray as an independent Om Gopal.

Ajay Bhatt is also challenged in Ranikhet by party rebel Pramod Nainwal and his wife Himani.

Though the contests in most of the seats is likely to be straight between the Congress and BJP, presence of rebel challengers as independents in the fray may dent votes of the party they may have broken away with.

However, both parties are hopeful that the problem will be sorted out before it is too late.

BJP in charge of Uttarakhand Shyam Jaju issued a stern message on the sidelines of a party function in Rishikesh yesterday saying those who refuse to withdraw by the last date for withdrawal of nominations will be expelled from the party.

PCC spokesman Mathuradutt Joshi said senior party leaders including AICC observers are trying to assuage the flared tempers of the rebels who have entered the contest and they hope to succeed by tomorrow.
