A young sailor has died onboard a naval ship off the coast here due to sudden illness, the Navy said today.

Describing as “unfortunate and tragic” the demise of sailor Ankur Choudhary onboard ‘INS Satpura’ yesterday, the Navy said, he had complained of fever and exhibited Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, which was followed by cardio pulmonary arrest.

“Despite the best efforts of the ship’s medical team to resuscitate him, he could not be revived and expired shortly thereafter,” a Navy release said.

The sailor’s mortal remains were transferred from sea to Naval Hospital ‘Sanjivani’ here by a Navy helicopter.

Choudhary hailed from Roorkee in Haridwar District of Uttarakhand and was unmarried.

Post mortem would be performed to assess the exact cause of his death, it said, adding the sailor’s family members, arriving here, would be given all assistance by naval authorities in planning the last rites.
