‘It’s a mockery that K’taka Guv gave BJP 15 days’ time to prove majority’: Rajinikanth

Among the latest voices to speak out on the political drama in Karnataka and BS Yeddyurappa’s decision to step down as Chief Minister on Saturday is actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth.

Speaking to reporters outside his Poes Garden residence in Chennai, Rajini slammed Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala’s decision to give the BJP 15 days’ time to prove majority on the floor of House a ‘mockery’.

“According to the Indian Constitution, they should prove majority in the legislative assembly. They (Congress and JD(S)) are going to prove the majority. I view this as a victory for democracy.”

He went on to say, “Actually it is a mockery that the Governor gave 15 days. He should not have done that. Definitely hats off- the Supreme Court intervened to give a good judgement. My affectionate and respectful greetings to them.”

When asked why he was a no-show at the Cauvery meet organised by his cinema contemporary and Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth laughed, “They said it was an all-party meet but I haven’t even started a party.” He also added that he would participate in the future.

“I wished success for their efforts. There are many more events, we will participate in that for the welfare of the people,” he said.

Kamal Haasan had called for an all-party meeting on the Cauvery dispute on Saturday even as the Supreme Court reserved its judgement on the matter after the final draft of the scheme was filed by the Centre on Thursday. Titled, ‘Tamil Nadu’s voice for Cauvery’, the Makkal Needhi Maiam event was attended by the RK Nagar MLA and AMMK’s TTV Dhinakaran and the PMK amongst other farmer’s groups.

While Rajinikanth announced his entry into politics in December last year, he has launched the Rajini Makkal Mandram, an outfit with a website and a mobile application where people can sign up. The organisation has also recruited district level secretaries and functionaries. However, Rajinikanth has stopped short of calling it a party. Kamal’s meet was ignored by the two main Dravidian parties in the state: the DMK and the AIADMK. VCK, MDMK and communist parties also gave it a miss.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting organised for women secretaries of the Rajini Makkal Mandram, Rajinikanth said he would be ready for the Lok Sabha elections in 2019.

When asked if his meetings with fans and functionaries were a build up to the launch of his party before 2019, Rajini said, “Yes, you could call it that. We will be ready for everything. On December 31, I had said when the parliamentary elections come, I will decide. But with regard to preparedness, we will be ready.”
