Doctor's Audi rams into rickshaw, kills 4 people

Five days after a BMW rammed into a cab in Delhi, killing its driver on the spot, another over-speeding luxury vehicle, this time an Audi, rammed head-on into an auto-rickshaw on Saturday here.

Police said that all four occupants in the rickshaw died on the spot, and the owner of the car and his accomplice fled the scene. It is suspected that the vehicle was being driven by a neurosurgeon from Safdarjung hospital.

The incident occurred at the Hindon Canal road near Indirapuram, barely 1 km from Delhi, during the early hours of Saturday. The deceased, Vishal (25), Rinku (40) and Yajuvendra (35) were heading home from one of their relatives’ place after dinner. Driver Sanjeev (25) was the fourth victim. According to witnesses, the Audi was coming towards Ghaziabad from Delhi while the auto was coming from the opposite direction.

“It is believed that all of a sudden the car driver lost control and crashed into the auto. The impact of the crash was such that the auto-rickshaw went rolling metres ahead from the spot, before coming to a halt. The driver and his accomplice who were in the car were not injured and fled from the spot,” said a senior police officer.

Police also recovered liquor bottles from the Audi and suspect that the driver was drunk. “Documents recovered from the car have identified its owner as Dr Manish Rawat, an associate professor (neurology) at Safdarjung hospital in Delhi. We have approached him for questioning and investigations are under way,” added the officer.

All four occupants in the three-wheeler were declared dead at the hospital. Police are checking the CCTV footage in order to ascertain the sequence of events.
