Opposition National Conference and Congress today staged a walkout from the Legislative Assembly in protest against “cane charge and tear gas shelling” on protesting employees, belonging to scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste communities here.

They demanded fulfillment of the demand of reservation in the promotions of the employees belonging to SC and ST.

The issue was raised as a point of order in the Assembly during discussion on the grants of Home Department by Congress MLA Aijaz Ahmed Khan but there was no response from the government, forcing the members of NC and Congress to resort to protests and walk into the Well of the House amid raising of slogans.

On this, former chief minister Omar Abdullah intervened and asked Speaker Kavinder Gupta to listen to the members point of order over the issue.

Khan later told the House that employees belonging to ST and SC communities were holding protests for their demands and police resorted to “cane charging to crush their protest”.

We demand the concerned DySP should be suspended and action should be taken against the police officials, he said.

On this, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Abdul Rehman Veeri told the House that the matter regarding reservation in promotions for ST and SC categories in the government services is presently sub-judice in the Supreme court of India.

However, members of NC and Congress were unsatisfied with the reply and pressed for action against the police personnel.

They walked into the Well of the House, creating ruckus and later staged a walkout from the House.
