84-year-old seasoned thief ‘Silver’ Srinivasan nabbed by Chennai cops

Notorious 84-year-old thief ‘Silver’ Srinivasan who got his name due to his penchant for stealing silver items, was nabbed by the police from Mylapore on Wednesday.

Police reportedly seized 20 sovereigns of gold jewellery and one kilo’s worth silver ornaments and utensils from him, according to a report in the Times of India.

The old man had zeroed in on elderly people this time around and conned them by pretending to ward off evil spirits.

On Wednesday, while the police were investigating a theft at a Mylapore house, CCTV footage of an old man entering the house emerged. When the police questioned Srinivasan who was walking down the street, he stated that he was living on the street as his family had turned him away. Police however, recognised him to be the ‘Silver’ thief using the ‘Facetagr’ mobile app, the report states.

Srinivasa Raghavan has been part of the Chennai crime scene for 70 years now. While in the police station, he recounted his years in crime which started at the age of 14 and he now has over 200 thefts to his name.

According to Mylapore police, Srinivasan would reportedly wait outside and target those who he thought would be gullible. He would even approach elderly couples, pretending to be their distant relative and then loot their homes.

Srinivasan was last booked by the police in 2015 for stealing gold jewellery from an apartment at NGO colony Adambakkam.

However, Srinivasan comes across as one who is known for his integrity and never shies away from admitting that he has committed a theft after getting caught, as per a report in The Hindu.

“I am Silver Srinivasan, the person you are looking for,” is what he tells the police.

He reportedly hails from Tirupati and leads a wandering life. His favourite targets are Velachery, Madipakkam and Pallikaranai, the Hindu report states.
