Vijay Bhatkar to head Nalanda University

Scientist Vijay Bhatkar will be the next Chancellor of Nalanda University, Rajgir, with President Pranab Mukherjee, in his capacity as visitor of the varsity, formalising the appointment on Friday.

A Padmashri recipient, Bhatkar will succeed George Yeo as the third Chancellor of the internationally renowned varsity and will hold office for a term of three years effective January 25, 2017.

Yeo had stepped down on November 25 last year citing a “lack of autonomy” and protesting a “surprise” top administrative reshuffle in the Nalanda University after President Mukherjee dissolved NU’s founding governing body comprising Nobel laureate Amartya Sen (also the Founder Chancellor), and revoked extension of Founder Vice Chancellor Gopa Sabharwal’s term.

An alumni of Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi, Bhatkar is best known as the architect of India’s first supercomputer — Param, and as the founder executive director of C-DAC, India’s national initiative in supercomputing.
