1) NIA to probe sabotage angle in train derailments in Kanpur, Andhra

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will probe the sabotage angle in the recent train derailments in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur and Andhra Pradesh’s Kuneru area.

The agency has taken over the probe in these cases following an order from the Home Ministry, official sources said today. An NIA team has already conducted an inspection of the site in Vizianagaram near Kuneru where Jagdalpur-Bhubaneswar Hirakhand Express went off the track to ascertain if it was an “act of terror” as the railway suspected sabotage. 39 people were killed in the accident that took place on Saturday. 2) 3 soldiers of Rashtriya Rifles given Sena Medal for gunning down Burhan Wani

Tucked away in the remote hills of south Kashmir, it is jubilation all around at the Rashtriya Rifles unit as three of its personnel have been awarded Sena Medal for having gunned down dreaded militant commander Burhan Wani whose killing plunged the valley into a welter of violence that lasted for months. As details of the July 8 operation last year emerge, it transpires that young Major Sandeep Kumar, who led the crack team following “actionable” intelligence input that Sartaj Aziz and two other militants were hiding in a house in Bumdoora village, showed nerves of steel and exemplary restraint in the face of extreme provocation in neutralising them. 3) Republic Day 2017 parade: Ceremonial artillery fires ‘perfect 21-Gun Salute’ despite rainy weather

The weather may have played a bit of a spoilsport at the Republic Day parade on Rajpath but the ceremonial artillery unit fired the traditional 21-Gun Salute on Thursday with “clockwork precision” despite the rains. “We did 10 days of physical practice, both on the site and in Delhi Cantt, which included rehearsing both with and without ammunition. And, today, the first round was fired on the first note of the National Anthem and the 21st round was shot on the 52nd second. Although it rained but the whole team worked in a well-coordinated manner and I reckon it was fired with possibly the best precision in last few years,” Lt Col Aditya Devrani of the ceremonial battery said. 4) J&K: 10 jawans killed in two avalanches in Gurez sector, rescue operations underway

At least 10 jawans were killed in two avalanches that struck Army camp in Gurez sector of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday. The Army has launched the search and rescue operation for missing soldiers. Six soldiers have been rescued. An avalanche hit an army camp in Gurez sector of Bandipora district near the Line of Control on Wednesday evening in which several soldiers were trapped, the army official said. Read more…
