With two days to go for December 30 deadline to deposit demonetised notes of Rs 500/1000, the Centre is likely to bring an ordinance on Wednesday to impose penalties for keeping old notes beyond a certain limit.
The matter is expected to come up before the Cabinet today.
Earlier on Tuesday, Congress vice-President Rahul Gandhi and Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee along with some regional parties at a meeting in Delhi sought to put up a united face raising the pitch against demonetisation by demanding resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
