1) Republic Day 2017: Complete list of Padma Vibushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri Awardees

Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. 2) Jammu and Kashmir: Avalanche hits army camp at Sonamarg, five dead including an officer

An army officer and four members of a family were killed in avalanches in Ganderbal and Bandipora districts of Kashmir. An avalanche hit an army camp at Sonamarg in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district this morning, a police official said. He said an army officer — Major Amit of High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) — was buried under the debris of the avalanche. Read more…

3) Animal welfare bodies move SC challenging new act allowing Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu

The Animal Welfare Board of India and other animal welfare bodies on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court challenging the new Act allowing Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu. The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment), Act, 2017 brought by Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, was on Monday adopted unanimously by a voice vote in the Assembly. 4) India ‘true friend’; President Trump, PM Modi extend invites to each other

Describing India as a “true friend” of the US, President Donald Trump invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the country later this year, the White House said on Tuesday night after both leaders spoke over phone and discussed issues such as trade, defence and terrorism. “During a call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, President Trump emphasised that the US considers India a true friend and partner in addressing challenges around the world,” the White House said in a readout of the call. 5) Australian Open:Nadal deflates Raonic in straight sets to reach semis

Rafael Nadal claimed a dominant straight-sets win over world number three Milos Raonic to advance to the semi-finals at the Australian Open, in Melbourne on Wednesday.

The 14-time Grand Slam champion was too clinical for the Canadian, winning 6-4, 7-6 (9/7), 6-4 in two hours 44 minutes and will play Bulgaria’s 15th seed Grigor Dimitrov in Friday’s semi-final. He leads Dimitrov 7-1. Nadal kept alive hopes of a much-anticipated ninth Grand Slam final with his great rival Roger Federer as the tournament got down to the last four. It is the Spanish great’s first Grand Slam semi-final appearance since his last 2014 French Open triumph after recent injury setbacks. Read more…
