Delhi police registers FIR in medico Saravanan Ganesan case, five months after his death

More than five months after 26-year-old Saravanan Ganesan, a student at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his Hauz Khas apartment, Delhi police registered and FIR in the case on Sunday.

A murder case has been registered against unknown persons under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

Saravanan, who hails from Tiruppur district was pursuing General Medicine at AIIMS, was found dead in his rented apartment in the posh Hauz Khas village in south Delhi on July 10. The police had initially claimed that the post-graduate medical student had committed suicide by injecting potassium chloride into his bloodstream.

An autopsy report carried out by the Department of Forensic Medicine at AIIMS, however, found that Saravanan could not have killed himself and called for a “meticulous investigation of the person/persons involved.”

His family and friends had demanded a CBI probe, expressing unhappiness with the Delhi police’s investigation. On Sunday, Saravanan’s father Ganesan told the media: “We don’t trust the Delhi police. In spite of knowing who the culprits are, the Delhi police is trying to shield them. We want a CBI enquiry. From the beginning we have maintained that the Delhi police have deliberately scuttled the probe. The murder was an insider’s job, we are sure that no one from outside could have done it.”

The family alleged on Saturday that Saravanan’s murder was an insider’s job to make a medical seat vacant. His mother said,” A general medicine seat in AIIMS costs Rs 5 crore. That is why he was killed.”

After completing his MBBS from Madurai Medical College, Saravanan secured the 73rd rank in the AIIMS entrance exam, qualifying for Pathology. He quit the course in March and returned to Tiruppur and spent three months preparing for the AIIMS entrance exam again. Securing the 47th rank this year, he qualified for General Medicine.
