Morena: Jagannath Gurjar, the 56-year-old sarpanch of a village in Madhya Pradesh, was all set to get hitched. All preparations were on, he had also booked a chopper to bring his bride home. But the plan didn’t materialise as the girl turned out to be a minor. That, and the fact that Gurjar was already married.

Gurjar, an affluent farmer from Bahrara in Morenda district, was set to be married on December 11. The district administration, however, got to know that the girl was a minor.

A team of Women and Child Welfare Department was sent for investigation. The investigators found out that the girl’s year of birth was mentioned as 2005 in her Class X marksheet and the marriage was immediately called off.

The sarpanch furnished a medical certificate claiming the girl’s age as 18 years and two months but the administration declined it. “The medical certificate is admissible only when the birth certificate and educational certificate is not available,” said an officer involved in the probe.

Gurjar had even got a no-objection certificate from his first wife to evade any legal hurdle.
