In one of the most scathing political attacks that one has heard or read from him, former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has accused Narendra Modi of setting a “dangerous precedent by his insatiable desire to tarnish every constitutional office, including that of the former Prime Minister and Army Chief”. This came after PM Modi accused senior Congress leaders of holding a secret meeting at Mani Shankar Aiyar’s residence, which was attended by a former Pakistani envoy and foreign minister, accusing the Congress of colluding with the neighbouring country to fix the Gujarat election.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala launched a counter-attack at Modi after the Prime Minister alleged that Pakistan was interfering in the Gujarat election to help the Congress and asked why he had made a surprise stopover in the neighbouring country nearly two years ago. “The PM made a stopover in Pakistan to attend a marriage ceremony in PM Nawaz Sharif’s family. Was he invited there?” Surjewala asked, referring to Modi’s December 2015 visit, the first by an Indian premier in over 10 years.
Hours after former PM Manmohan demanded an apology from Modi, Finance minister Arun Jaitley lashed out at him and demanded to know the context of his meeting with Pakistani diplomats. Jailtey ruled out any apology from the PM, and instead, accused Singh and other Congress leaders of violating national policy by holding a parallel dialogue with Pakistan.
