Alwar: A Muslim man who was transporting cows near the Rajasthan-Haryana border was shot dead allegedly by vigilantes while his aide was left battling for his life in a private hospital after being thrashed.

The incident took place in Fahari village near Govindh Gadh in Alwar district of Rajasthan. Sources said that the two men – Ummar Khan and Tahir Khan – were transporting the cows to Haryana when they were waylaid by the mob and assaulted.

While police were tight-lipped about the incident, official sources confirmed that Umar Khan died of a bullet wound. His body was kept in a mortuary. Tahir was taken to a private hospital near the state border.

The incident has sent ripples in the Mewat community, with residents launching a protest. Relatives of the two men alleged that the crime was planned and policemen too were present when the crime took place.

They have demanded immediate arrest of the accused, but no FIR in the case has been registered so far.

Ummar Khan’s death took place not very far from where Pehlu Khan died after being assaulted by cow vigilantes in April this year. The 55-year-old was also transporting cows when he was waylaid by so-called gau rakshaks and thrashed. He had died of his wounds two days later.

The death had triggered national outrage and a demand to rein in right-wing vigilante groups. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June had warned that strict action will be taken against cow vigilantes, but that did not stop such groups from taking the law into their hands. Between Pehlu Khan’s death and Modi’s statement, there had been 26 cattle related violent incidents in the country.
