The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rains for Chennai as well as other coastal districts in Tamil Nadu for the next two days.
According to IMD, the rainfall would start on Saturday night and would go on for two days. S Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Meteorological department, said that low pressure is perfectly placed over southwest Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka with associated cyclonic circulation extending upto 5.8 km above mean sea level, reported The New Indian Express.
About 2cm to 6cm of rains are expected in Chennai on Sunday, according to Met department. Most parts of north coastal Tamil Nadu and some parts of south coastal Tamil Nadu would be getting rainfall on Sunday, said MeT. It is also predicted that there would be isolated rainfall in the interior districts of the state.
The Times of India reported that Tamil Nadu has received 25cm of rainfall against the usual 26cm of rain. However, Chennai has recorded excess rainfall which is 68 cm of the usual 41cm. Also, the combined level of water reservoirs at Chembarambakkam, Poondi, Redhills and Cholavaram is 37% of its total capacity.
Weather blogger Pradeep John predicted that rains would continue till Wednesday. “The rains will start on Saturday night and will extend till Wednesday with breaks. Some spells are expected to be heavy and very heavy particularly the belt of Tiruvallur, Chennai and Kancheepuram. Nearby interior district such as Vellore, Villupuram and other coastal district such as cuddalore, Pondy, Karaikkal, Nagai and thiruvarur will also get rain,” he posted on Saturday.
Chief Minister Edapaddi Palaniswami has promised that the government would take steps to prevent the water stagnation in low lying areas and would implement a three-phase project for laying stormwater drains at a cost of Rs. 4,034 crore.
