Signs of uncertainty? TMC withdraws statement on Bhangar clashes

In what could be interpreted as a sign of unrest and uncertainty over the future course of action regarding Bhangur clashes within the top ranks of Trinamool Congress, the party withdrew its statement shortly after issuing it on Tuesday.

A tweet that went out from Trinamool Congress’ official Twitter handle read, “No land will be acquired if people don’t want to give away land. Proposed power grid will be relocated if required.”

However, minutes after the statement was issued, it was deleted.

On the other hand, Trinamool Congress had mailed the same statement to media houses, which was followed up by a secondary mail, which read, “Ignore the earlier mail.”

This statement came in the wake of clashes breaking out between the villagers and police in Bhangar. While the villagers had earlier demanded that the work be suspended at this Power Grid Corporation Limited’s Bhangar substation, their latest demand is that the land, which was acquired by the state government be returned to them. Two people have been killed in the clashes so far.

Political parties alleged that the ruling Trinamool Congress succumbed under the pressure created by these villagers and announced on suspension of work on this substation.

This apart, no statement from the state government or the Trinamool Congress was issued till late night.
