Seven quacks arrested, 12 clinics sealed in Thiruvannamalai after surprise health raids

Following a surprise inspection by health officials in Thiruvannamalai district, seven quacks have been arrested and 12 clinics sealed. The police are also in search of five quacks who are absconding, reported The Times of India.

The seven people who were arrested did not have any qualifications. Their names are Murgesan from Chengam, Ravi and Chandran from Aavoor, Saravanan from Vaipoor, Kathiravan from Vettavalam, Panneer Selvam from Polur and Kalaiselvi from Sandavasal in Thiruvannamalai district.

Thiruvannamalai collector KS Kandasamy told ToI that the quacks were disrupting treatment of patients with dengue. Many of these patients from rural areas were consulting quacks and came to government hospitals only in advance stages of dengue.

The surprise check came a day after Tamil Nadu Health Minister Vijayabhaskar visited Thiruvannamalai to know about the fever cases in the district. Sources in the health department told ToI that the minister met a dengue patient from Government Thiruvannamalai Medical College and Hospital on Friday and the patient informed him that she had visited a quack before being admitted to the government hospital.

After this, the minister asked the district administration and health officials to carry out drives to take action against quacks. ToI reported that health officials from both Chennai and Thiruvannamalai got divided into three team and carried out surprise inspections in and around Chengam, Polur, Vettavalam and Arni. The officials also sealed their clinics.

A health official said that they confiscated 45 vials of 30 ml diclofenac, a pain killer from Murgesan’s clinic. Mostly this drug is only available in 1ml or 2ml vials in pharmacies. They are yet to find how he managed to get the medicine in such a huge quantity.
