After setting the tone for transportation in the national Capital, the Delhi Metro is now leading the way in cleaning up after itself. In a move to save the environment, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is developing an Ecology Park using scrap material and leftovers from its own construction sites.
The park, spread over 42,000 sqm in Shastri Park, will have on display the artworks created out of waste by 12 artists. It will soon be thrown open for public.
“Waste and scrap materials have been used to create interesting sculptures that will be placed at the Eco Park at various locations. Around 20–25 tonnes of waste was used to create 12 sculptures,” said a DMRC official.
Apart from waste metal, pipes, chipped tiles, leftover Kota stone and granite have also been used to create the park. “As many as 11 Indian sculptors and a South Korean artist were involved in the project, and each one of them has created a unique sculpture for the park,” he added.
Another distinguishing feature of the park, officials said, is the use of medicinal plants, herbs and rare plants. “Landscaping has been done through native species of shrubs and trees. Seasonal flowering plants will be used for beautification. Species requiring less water have also been planted in the park,” said a DMRC official.
“The park will be completely environment friendly. Solar panels are being installed to generate energy, and only treated sewage water will be used in the park. Green waste, such as leaves and grass, will be recycled to make manure,” said the official.
The park will also have an artificial lake connected to a rain water harvesting pit, and multiple sections, including a Yoga Park, Open Theatre, Children’s Play Park, CISF Parade Ground, and a Multipurpose Hall.
