Another breach in Bihar’s Bhagalpur, this time in embankment wall

A portion of the guard wall of an embankment over a rain fed river breached in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district on Thursday, leading to spread of water in the agricultural filed of adjoining villages.

The incident comes close on the heels of the breach in the wall of Bateshwar Ganga Pump Nahar Yojna (BGPNY) canal in Kahalgaon sub-division of the district on Tuesday, a day before its inauguration by chief minister Nitish Kumar.

The wall of Rahua Bund (embankment) over Bilasi river breached near Saruni-Bakcahppar village in Sahkund block of the district, 190 km east of Patna, causing waterlogging in agricultural fields at Amkhoria, Banama and Satpaira villages. As the water level was low, no damage was done to the standing crops.

This was the second incident of breach in the embankment this year, district administration sources said.

The guard wall of the embankment was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 80 lakh nearly a year ago by the Bhagalpur division of minor irrigation department, the sources added.

Bhagalpur sadar sub-divisional officer Roshan Kushwaha also confirmed that the work for the construction of the guard wall and strengthening of the embankment was undertaken last year by the minor irrigation department.

The breach would be plugged after the current harvesting season was over, Kushwaha said.
