Bengal BJP VP arrested on charges of cheating, party says TMC playing 'vindictive politics'

West Bengal BJP vice president Jay Prakash Majumdar was arrested by Bidhannagar City Police on Saturday on charges of cheating.

Majumdar was arrested by the police after eight and a half hours of questing in connection with alleged cheating of over Rs.7 lakhs. This arrest was made based on a complaint of one Arup Ratan Ray at the Bidhannagar North Police Station in August last year, according to the officials of Bidhannagar City Police. Last year, several candidates of the school service commission including Ray had staged a protest and surfaced allegations of irregularities in the commission. Majumdar had suggested that they take legal steps to tame irregularities. According to sources in the police, Majumdar had taken Rs.7,20,000 in two phases from Ray.

Ray claims that Majumdar promised all legal help in return of the money paid to him, however, he did not help file the case of irregularities in High Court and the Supreme Court. On the other hand, Bengal BJP leaders including the president of the unit, Dilip Ghosh claimed that this is the handiwork of the ruling party as two of its party MPs have been arrested by the CBI for money laundering.

“Trinamool Congress believes in vindictive politics. The fact that two of its MPs – Sudip Bandyapadhyay and Tapas Pal have been arrested, they are now trying to target our party and leaders,” said Ghosh.
