Watch | Ram naam japna, gareeb ka maal apna: Rahul Gandhi mocks PM Modi on demonetization

Speaking at Congress’ Jan Vedna Sammelan, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday attacked PM Modi’s demonetization move. Imitating PM Modi’s way of speaking, he called his statements “dialogues from Amitabh Bachchan’s movies.”

“Jaise Amitabh Bachchan ki filmon mein hota hai, dialogue, waisa dialogue Narendra Modi ji ne diya,” he said.

Calling demonetization a surgical strike on poor, he reiterated his stand that the farmers and poor people of the country were made victims of this surgical strike. Gandhi said, “Jaise dialogue hote hain, waise hi PM ne kiya aur kaha, ‘Mitron, ye jo jeb mein 500, 1000 ka note hai ab ye kaagaz ho gaya hai kaagaz’.” (Like one of those dialogues, PM informed the people of the country that all 500, 1000 notes were now merely a piece of paper)

He also questioned Modi government’s philosophy, calling it “suit-boot” government, saying that they were pocketing poor people’s money in the name of ‘Lord Rama’. “Ram naam japna, gareeb ka maal apna- ye philosophy hai suit-boot ki sarkar ki; isi se aapko ladna hai,” he said.

Congress VP accused Modi of being capable of capturing farmer’s land. He drew parallels to freedom struggle wherein Britishers were “kicked out” of the country, and called India a “smart nation”. “Ye desh akalmand desh hai, angrezon ko bhagaya hai. Chaand tak mission bhej diya hai,” he said. “Modi ji ne kya kiya? kaha ki mera naam Narendra Modi hai aur mai tumse tumhari (farmers) zameen chheen sakta hoon,” he added.

Gandhi also blamed RSS and BJP for implementing demonetization by spreading hatred, he also said that they were ruining the country. He made this statements on the grounds that crore of people were waiting in bank queues, but the corrupt people were at “bank’s backdoor as they didn’t need to wait in the queue.

Asking people to trust Congress, Rahul Gandhi said it’s symbol says “don’t be scared”, whereas the other “philosophy in the country is that of be afraid and scare others.”

“Found Congress’ symbol in Shiv ji, Gurunanak, Buddha and Mahavir’s pictures. Asked Karan Singhji what does it mean? He said ‘daro mat‘,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Gandhi, who had just returned to India from vacation, had said that for the first time in history, a Prime Minister of India was being ridiculed the world over. He addressing the national convention of the Congress party in the absence of party president Sonia Gandhi, and said that for the first time the financial bedrock of the country, the position of the RBI Governor has been ridiculed.
