Chennai: Students manhandled for not standing during national anthem in theatre, 4 detained

Four people were detained in Chennai on Wednesday after a group of students were allegedly manhandled for not standing when the national anthem was being played in the cinema hall before a film, reported Hindustan Times. The incident took place in Chennai’s Vadapalani.

The incident comes a month after a youth and two students were allegedly beaten up in another theatre in Chennai.

On November 30, the Supreme Court directed that cinema halls across the country must play the national anthem before the screening of a film and people should stand up as a mark of respect.

The court also directed that the national flag be shown on screen when the anthem is played.
