Tamil Nadu reeling under crop loss caused by drought: Nine farmers die in two days

Even as Tamil Nadu chief minister O Panneerselvam declared Tamil Nadu as drought-hit on Tuesday, the condition of farmers appears to be deteriorating. In two days, nine farmers have reportedly died.

In Erode, a farmer committed suicide on Tuesday as he could not deal with the losses caused by drought and he was unable to pay for the loan. Bank officials had asked Palanisamy to repay the loans as soon as possible. He committed suicide on Tuesday at 5am by hanging himself in a shed near his farmland, reported The New Indian Express.

In another case, a farmer in Coimbatore, suffered a cardiac arrest after facing losses due to drought. The farmer, Ramasamy, used to work on a 2.5-acre parcel of land.

He had reduced cultivation to one acre but continued to face losses and had also borrowed Rs 2 lakh in crop loans.

In Namakkal, a 60-year-old farmer, died of cardiac arrest after seeing her withered onion crop on Tuesday. The farmer, Kamatchi, from Vadavathur had cultivated onion in two acres of land. In another incident, Arunachalam, a resident of Thenkumarai village died on his field after taking stock of wilted crops, reported TNIE.

Moreover, a coconut farmer in Pudukottai district, died near Ponnamaravathi after seeing withered coconut trees on Tuesday. Alagappan, the deceased, who had around 500 coconut trees in his five-acre land, collapsed and died.

In Cuddalore, a 70-year-old farmer, Veerapan and his wife Arayi (62) died of heart attack within a few hours of each other at Keezhamankudi village near Bhuvanagiri on Monday night.
