Why are people posting hearts on Facebook?

On Tuesday, a number of people were posting random hearts on their Facebook timeline, which made us wonder why there was so much love being circulated on the social media platform. We then found out that the hearts had something to with breast cancer awareness.

Although breast cancer awareness month is observed in October, it isn’t common to notice the heart emojis getting circulated during the course of the year to ask women to get their breasts examined.

The concept is as follows: Women are supposed to post a heart on their female friends’ Facebook walls, then send a private message explaining that the heart is a subtle reminder to get themselves checked for lumps.

The goal is to then create a chain reaction, but the catch is that men aren’t supposed to know as the game is only meant for women.

In 2016, it was reported that India witnessed a 1.5 lakh increase in breast cancer cases. Studies also determine that over 17 lakh women will have breast cancer by 2020 in the country.
