After making her acting debut in Bollywood with R Balki’s Shamitabh, Akshara Haasan returns home with the much-hyped Ajith-starrer Vivegam that is releasing next month. While she naturally isn’t at liberty to divulge too much information about the film, she says her experience has been wonderful so far. “No matter how many films I may go on to in the future, Vivegam will always be very special for me. Also, I have learned a lot from being part of it,” she says.
She chose to do this film because “it is a story that has not been told like this before. It isn’t your usual Ajith film.” She found her character to be different too. “She is unassuming. My role in the film is dramatically different from the one I played in Shamitabh. I also loved the whole tone of Vivegam and the way it is written.”
Akshara hopes to have brought in her spontaneity into the film. “I think that is the job of an actor. It is not a bonus. You have to bring in that energy each time,” she says.
It was this positive energy, which she says was a big part of director Siruthai Siva’s narration, that drew her to Vivegam. The fact that it starred Ajith was a bonus, and like many of his other co-stars, she can’t stop gushing about him. “When he met me on the sets, he called me, ‘ji’. Even my dad calls others that. Ajith sir treats everyone with respect irrespective of their age or experience. I admire him for what he is.”
Akshara shares screen space with Kajal Aggarwal in this film. “I knew she was on board when I signed this film. On a lighter note, I’d have loved to be the heroine, but hey, I’m quite happy with my role,” she says. I point out that she isn’t your typical heroine. For starters, her sense of styling is quite unique, and well, she likes to keep her hair short. “It comes from wanting to be comfortable, I think. I know I am different, and I like it this way. I am not trying to be anyone else and I will never wear something I’m not comfortable in,” she adds.
Occasionally, she discusses her scripts with her family. “When I am confused, mainly,” she says. “They’re more experienced than I am. I’d be lying if I told you that I take decisions on my own all the time. My family means a lot to me.”
Akshara hopes to do more Tamil films. “I don’t make divisions in terms of language. I am also working on getting better at speaking Tamil. When I talk to my dad, I talk in Tamil these days, and he understands why I do that,” she laughs. She’s, of course, doing Sabaash Naidu with her father,
Kamal Haasan. “Dad would be the best person to talk about the film, but I can tell you it was a lot of fun working with him and Shruti!” She admits that her assistant-director experience helps her pick good scripts. “I am not interested in doing a film only on the basis of a good story. The screenplay should be good too.”
There have been some rumours about Akshara making a possible debut in the Kannada film industry. “No, I am not a part of any Kannada film for the moment,” she signs off.

I am following Bigg Boss Tamil on a regular basis, and it’s a delight to watch my dad host the show. I think he’s terrific.
When Vivegam gets released, I know the audience will compare me and Shruti, but hey, that’s all right. Comparisons are bound to happen.
Ten years from now, I’d love to see myself cast in my dad’s film. I can hear you think why not now… I’d say I am not prepared. (Smiles)
