I can’t wait to watch Vikram Vedha: Kathir

Kathir wants to set an example for the younger actors. “I am, any day, more comfortable doing a Madha Yaanai Koottam or a Kirumi than films I don’t believe in,” he says.

The actor, who has played an important part in Vikram Vedha that’s releasing this week, is excited. “Usually, I am not, but I am really looking forward to seeing Vikram Vedha’s FDFS in the theatres because I have been kicked about Pushkar-Gayatri’s script from when I first heard it,” he says.

Ask him if his role is a positive or a negative one, and he says: “Vikram Vedha talks about moral ambiguity. Yaarum correct illa, yaarum thappu illa. Everybody is right from their point of view, and I play one such ambiguous character. Though there’s a generous dose of action and drama, it’s an emotional film at its heart.”

Kathir is also upbeat about Sigai, for which he has undergone a makeover. “I’d not say I play a transgender person, because the role has two different dimensions. The film was shortlisted for the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) award, but I won’t say it’s a festival film. It’s a crime thriller and has all the necessary commercial elements. Sigai, which will get released next month, is about the issue of sex trade in and around Chennai,” he tells us.

He’s also simultaneously shooting for Chaththru in which he plays a cop. “It’s a family entertainer, along the lines of Naan Mahaan Alla. I am paired opposite Srushti Dange,” he adds. Another film Kathir has is Pariyerum Perumal directed by Maari Selvaraj, an associate of filmmaker Ram. “The film is set in Tirunelveli,” he says.

The actor feels that the audience these days know when there’s not enough substance in the film. “In the past, there was not enough awareness about this, and hence, good cinema got labelled as art films. Now, small films can sustain too.”

Kathir realises that he’s still fairly unknown. “Many may not know who I am, but that won’t stop me from being a part of unique films,” he says.
