Life in a vegetable market

The hustle and bustle of a vegetable market is the setting for debutant director Bala Murugan’s Thangaradham, that’s releasing tomorrow.

Bala says he went with his gut feeling for the story of this film, and shares that he was inspired by the pain he felt at some of those eking out their living in extremely difficult circumstances.

“I’ve tried to bring to light  the suffering of two groups of people. The title of my is the name of one of the vehicles used to transport vegetables to the market from the nearby village of Ottanchatiram,” he says.

A resident of Ottanchatiram (between Palani and Dindigul) himself, the director says he has been a silent witness to the daily bout of fights between rival groups  of sellers in the past.

“At the end of the day, the fight was essentially over a potential meal, which made it all the more painful for me,” he says.

After finding a willing producer in CM Varghese, the director says that after he settled on Tubelight fame Aditi Krishna as the lead girl, he still had to do a fair bit of running to find his protagonist.

“I needed an actor with a rugged face–someone who looks like he lives in the present without a  care in the world for tomorrow.

Vetri, who played the role of a villain in Strawberry with a lot of conviction, is playing a similar role in this film. He has done a great job,” says Bala, a self-admitted fan of K Bhagyaraj.

“I am in awe of his ability to reach the masses. I’ve tried to take cue from some of his work, and have done my best to make a film packaged with both action and comedy that will appeal to the family audience,” he says.
