Director Gautham Ramachandran joyous over success of Richie teaser

Actor Nivin Pauly

Pa Ranjith’s Kabali garnered over five million views within a day of its release, which gave it the record for the highest number of views (in a day) for an Indian movie teaser. Now, the teaser of Nivin Pauly-starrer Richie has broken this record, albeit on Facebook.

Debutant director Gautham Ramachandran is thrilled about the reception, and shares that they had planned it in such a way so as to target only Facebook users. “I thank my marketing research team for making this possible. We found that more than 60 per cent of people who actively follow films have access to Facebook. Hence, our strategy to share the official teaser on Nivin Pauly’s Facebook page.”

He also says that without Nivin’s help, this wouldn’t have been possible. “He is one hell of an actor, and  knows what he wants. He was very involved right from the scripting stage. From Mohanlal and Anurag Kashyap to Dhanush and Anirudh, everybody supported us on Twitter. I was surprised when the teaser hit one million views just two hours after it was uploaded,” he adds.

Gautham is convinced that good promotional campaigns play a big role in determining a film’s success. “Today we see even Mani Ratnam sir giving interviews on television channels. Everyone has understood the importance of the reach that good promotions can give,” he smiles.

Richie is Nivin Pauly’s first film to be made only in Tamil. Said to be an investigative thriller set in a coastal area, the film, which also stars Shraddha Srinath, Natty, and Prakash Raj, is allegedly a remake of the Kannada superhit, Ulidavaru Kandanthe, starring Rakshit Shetty.
