From stage to films

Theatre artist Madhuvanthi Arun has now bagged a role in an upcoming film to be directed by Ashwin Saravanan of Maya fame. The daughter of veteran actor and dramatist Y G Mahendra, Madhuvanthi, who played the role of a police officer in Vijay Sethupathi-starrer Dharmadurai, is also a part of Arya’s Kadamban and Raghava Lawrence’s Sivalinga which are releasing tomorrow.

Talking to CE, Madhuvanthi says, “In Sivalinga, I play the role of a CBI Officer, who hands over a case to a character played by Raghava Lawrence. P Vasu sir is a veteran, and I was amazed at how quickly he works. It was truly a learning experience to see how he conceives a shot and gets exactly what he wants from his artistes.”   She also has high praise for Raghava Lawrence.
“He is a humble person, a wonderful human being and very down to earth. This is our first film together even though I know him for some time now. He doesn’t have the airs of being a star at all.”
Other artistes she has worked with in this film include “Radha Ravi uncle, Urvashi aunty and Bhanupriya ma’am. These are all artistes who have worked with my father; people who I’ve known for years.”  She says her role in Kadamban is more substantial.
“It’s also the first film I’m doing alongside my father. It’s a negative role but I wouldn’t call the character a villain.”

Calling the entire team of Kadamban “young”, Madhuvanthi says the film was predominantly shot outdoors.
In the upcoming Ashwin Saravanan film starring SJ Suryah and Sshivada Nair, Madhuvanthi plays a doctor. “To work with an actor who’s made a film like Vaali is a great opportunity,” she says of Suryah. The actress has also finished a film with Sameeer Bharat Ram, who’s the executive producer of Uriyadi for a film titled Ma Ma Ki Ki. “The film has a nice concept of five different stories that combine into one beautiful whole,” she says.
