Vijay-starrer ‘Sarkar’ a stolen story? Case filed against director AR Murugadoss for plagiarism

By Online Desk

We are just two weeks away from the release of much awaited Vijay-starrer ‘Sarkar’, and just like previous AR Murugadoss-Vijay films, ‘Sarkar’ has also hit a hurdle. Writer and assistant director Varun Rajendran has filed a complaint against director AR Murugadoss for plagiarism.

In the complaint filed with South Indian Film Writers Association, Varun had stated that the plot of ‘Sarkar’ has been copied from his ‘Sengol’, which was registered with the Writer’s Union in 2007.

In the complaint, Rajendran said that he had discussed the story with Vijay’s father director SA Chandrasekar a few years back, who had reportedly ignored the writer at the time.

Currently, the issue is being handled by the chairperson of the South Indian Film Writers’ Association, K Bhagyaraj.

Murugadoss was accused of plagiarism on two previous occasions. His 2004 film ‘Ghajini’ was criticised for being similar to Christopher Nolan’s ‘Memento’, while screenwriter Minjur Gopi filed a complaint that ‘Kaththi’ (2014) story was stolen from him. Gopi later withdrew the complaint.

This is not the first time that ‘Sarkar’ is facing a controversy. During the first-look poster release of ‘Sarkar’ in August, Vijay was seen posing with a cigarette in his mouth. The Health and Family Welfare Department had sent a legal intimation notice to the actor, director AR Murugadoss and producer Sun Pictures for violating the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003.

At that time, PMK leader and Tamil Nadu MP Dr Anbumani Ramadoss had also tweeted about the issue. His tweet reads, “Shame on actor Vijay for promoting smoking in the first look of his next movie” — with hashtags #ActResponsibly #DoNotPromoteSmoking.”

Vijay’s ‘Sarkar‘ is produced by Sun Pictures, with music by AR Rahman. The film also stars Keerthy Suresh, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Yogi Babu and Radha Ravi. This is the third time Vijay and Murugadoss have collaborated after hit films ‘Thuppakki’ and ‘Kaththi’. Sarkar’ which is slated to release on Diwali (November 6th).
