CHENNAI: Popular Tamil television actress Priyanka of ‘Vamsam’ serial fame, committed suicide at her residence at Valasaravakkam in the city in the early hours of Wednesday.
Police said the actress was found hanging from the ceiling of the fan when her maid turned up for work in the morning.
As the milk sachet was found lying at the entrance of the door, the maid grew suspicious, entered Priyanka’s room and found her hanging from the ceiling.
Her body was shifted to Government Kilpauk Hospital for post-mortem. Police, quoting preliminary inquiry, said family dispute was said to be the reason for the actress taking the extreme.
Priyanka married a basketball coach, Arunbala, three years ago, and the couple did not have any children. This has triggered frequent quarrels between them.
Priyanka, who became a household name for her role of Jyothika in actress Ramya Krishnan’s Tamil soap opera ‘Vamsam’ which ran from 2013 to 2017, was living alone in the house for the past few weeks.
One of the actresses expressed concern over the increase in suicide rate of TV artistes due to mental agony. It was high time the Small Screen Artistes Association organised a workshop or counselling session for its members.
