Breaking barriers

CHENNAI: After Visaranai premiered at the SAIFF (South Asian International Film Festival) in New York in 2015, a lot of buzz came about. However, it wasn’t the only Tamil film to be screened at the festival.

A short film, Broken Image, starring Kanna Ravi (popular for starring in the web series, Livin’), also graced the festival. The film has since then been screened at close to a dozen festivals and received accolades at each of them, including being the runner-up at the recently held Manhattan International Film Festival.

Talking to CE about the film, director VK Aravind, says, “Broken Image is about how humanity is taken for granted these days. It follows a photo-journalist who witnesses a tragic situation, and is forced to choose between shooting the incident and saving a life.”

Aravind feels that the recognition his film has received is because of how rooted his story is. “Even during the Chennai floods, people were taking selfies and posting it on social media. We’re becoming numb to emotions. So, I think people can relate to the story.”

Aravind is planning to make another short film by the end of this year. “I’ve also written two feature films and am working on my third script. It looks like it will all materialise soon!”

Broken Image also won the Best Editing Award at the Delhi Shorts International Film Festival. Editor M Ravikumar, who edited the recently released Kannada film, Ayana, says, he has “never worked on such a film before.”

He says, “The film was well-planned and I was with the team right from pre-production. So we knew what shots were necessary even before the first schedule began. That’s why we got the output we did.”

Ravikumar adds, “The director wrote the film in a linear fashion, but I made it non-linear to make it more hard-hitting and emotional. It makes the film feel unpredictable.”
