Actor Jai booked again for drunken driving

CHENNAI: Tamil film actor Jai’s driving licence could be revoked after he was arrested for drunk driving for the second time in three years, in the wee on Thursday. The police later released him on station bail. They also decided to recommend to the transport department to cancel his driving licence.

In the latest incident, Jai was at the wheel when his Audi rammed the sidewall of the Adyar flyover on LB Road. The Adyar traffic investigation wing also booked him on charges of not carrying his driving licence, vehicle insurance and the RC book. It was on April 4, 2014 that Jai was first booked for drunk driving after his car rammed the sidewall of the bridge near Kasi Theatre.

Usually drunk drivers involved even in minor accidents are booked under the stringent IPC section 308  (attempt to commit culpable homicide) and remanded in judicial custody. But in Jai’s case it is learnt that this section was not invoked.

The investigation officer said the actor was returning from a film shooting and was heading home in Besant Nagar around 2 am when the accident occurred.

“As he drove up the Adyar flyover, and took a turn to the road leading to Thiruvanmiyur on LB Road, he rammed his car on the sidewall. Passersby, who noticed this, alerted the Adyar traffic police who rushed to the spot and found Jai,” said the officer.

The actor was brought to the station and a case was filed against him. “No one was injured, including the actor. Only the headlight of the vehicle was damaged,” the officer said.

Jai was booked under IPC sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 185 (driving by a drunken person or by a person under the influence of drugs), 181 (not carrying driving licence) and 196 (driving an uninsured vehicle) of The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
