Tata Power’s total operating capacity from renewable electricity-generation sources has touched 3,060 megawatt (me), thereby making it India’s largest renewable energy company.
Of the total operating capacity, wind energy tops the chart with 1,074 mw of operating capacity, followed by 918 mw of solar, 693 mw of hydro power and 375 mw of waste-gas based generation, claimed the power company.
During the ongoing fiscal, the company added 1,346 mw of renewable energy generation capacity, thereby making it possible to become the largest player in terms of operating capacity in the country.
“We are delighted to have crossed the 3,000 mw milestone for our operating non-fossil capacity. This is one of the many key milestones in our endeavor to generate 35-40% of Tata Power’s total generation capacity from clean energy sources. This mammoth leap is well in line with our aim to enhance and increase our non-fossil fuel capacity, and maintaining our value of sustainable growth. We will continue in our endeavours to further strengthen our operations with excellence and optimally utilise our resources to boost the generation capacity,” said Anil Sardana, chief executive officer and managing director of Tata Power.
“Tata Power’s wind generation capacity has also increased by 82% in FY17, up from 591 mw in FY16 to 1,074 mw in FY 17, and solar generation capacity has gone up by 1,539%, from 56 mw in FY16 to 918 mw in FY17,” said a Tata Power spokesperson.
The increase in its non-fossil based operational capacity shot up considerably due to Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) acquiring Welspun Renewables Energy Private Limited (WREPL) during FY16.
Spread across ten states, WREPL is among the largest operating solar portfolios in India. It has about 1,008 mw of renewable power projects comprising about 862 mw solar and around 146 mw wind energy.
TPREL has renewable energy projects in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. It is also in the process of implementing nearly 500 mw of renewable power projects at some more locations.
The company is also seeking to grow its renewable portfolio in India and in select international markets through organic and inorganic opportunities.
Earlier this month, TPREL had commissioned 36 mw wind capacity of a 100 mw wind farm (under construction) at Nimbagallu in Andhra Pradesh and a 49 mw solar plant at Kayathar, Tamil Nadu, under WREPL.
