Will Jaitley announce the Budget on Feb 1? SC to hear plea on Jan 20

The Supreme Court has sought material and legal provisions in support of a plea seeking the postponement of the Budget presentation to a date after the assembly polls.

While the government decided to advance the date of the Budget presentation to February 1 instead of Feb-end, the Opposition went up to the Election Commission saying that the BJP government could very well announce pro-poor and other sops in the financial statement presentation, which could sway the votes in the five states that are slated to go for Assembly elections.

The SC deferred a plea seeking postponement of the Budget statement to January 20, saying it didn’t have any provision in support of the plea currently.

The Narendra Modi-led government advanced the Union Budget to February 1 saying that the Finance Bill could be passed before the beginning of the new fiscal year which would ensure fund allocation well in time.

This year, the Union Budget will also merge the General and the Railway Budget for the first time since 90 years.
